  • 1 Cocktail cherry For the garnish

  • Stir, never shake. Shaking clouds the drink and adds air.

About the Bourbon Manhattan

The Manhattan dates to New York in the 1870s or early 1880s and is the first famous cocktail to pair whiskey with vermouth. The best-known story places it at the Manhattan Club, at a banquet supposedly hosted in 1874 by Jennie Jerome, Winston Churchill's mother. Historians doubt it, because she was in England and about to give birth at the time.

A more plausible account, from a veteran bartender named William Mulhall, credits a man called Black who kept a bar on Broadway near Houston Street in the 1860s. Whoever made it first, the drink was in print by 1882 and in bartending guides by 1884.

The original spirit was American rye. Bourbon became common after Prohibition and makes a rounder, sweeter Manhattan. The template of whiskey, sweet vermouth and bitters went on to shape the Martini, the Rob Roy and the Boulevardier.

Bourbon Manhattan Variations

  • Perfect Manhattan: split the vermouth into equal parts sweet and dry.
  • Rob Roy: Scotch whisky in place of rye or bourbon.
  • Black Manhattan: an Italian amaro such as Averna in place of the vermouth.
  • Dry Manhattan: dry vermouth and a lemon twist instead of sweet vermouth and a cherry.
  • Boulevardier: bourbon, sweet vermouth and Campari.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is in a Manhattan?

A Manhattan is made with 50ml (1.75 oz) rye or bourbon whisky, 20ml (0.75 oz) sweet vermouth and 2 dashes of Angostura bitters. It is served in a coupe.

How strong is a Manhattan?

Made to this recipe, a Manhattan is about 30% ABV and contains roughly 20 g of pure alcohol. That is about 1.4 US standard drinks, 2.0 Australian standard drinks or 2.5 UK units. It has around 155 calories per serving.

Should a Manhattan be made with rye or bourbon?

Rye is the original and gives a drier, spicier drink. Bourbon makes it softer and sweeter. A higher-proof bourbon such as Wild Turkey 101 sits between the two.

Is a Manhattan shaken or stirred?

Stirred. A Manhattan contains only spirits, so stirring chills and dilutes it while keeping it clear and silky. Shaking makes it cloudy and thin.

What is the difference between a Manhattan and an Old Fashioned?

An Old Fashioned sweetens whisky with sugar and is served on ice. A Manhattan uses sweet vermouth and is served up in a stemmed glass, so it tastes more herbal and wine-like.

Does vermouth go off?

Yes. Vermouth is a fortified wine. Keep an opened bottle in the fridge and use it within four to six weeks, or the Manhattan will taste flat and stale.
Drink responsibly. The legal drinking age in India varies by state, from 18 to 25. Alcohol content shown is an estimate and changes with ice, dilution and the strength of the bottle you use. We do not sell alcohol.
