Bill Samuels Sr. founded Maker's Mark in 1954 on a Kentucky farm that had been making whisky since 1805. He famously burned his family's old rye recipe and developed a new wheated bourbon that was softer and more approachable. The distinctive square bottle with red wax dipping was his wife Margie's idea. Every bottle is still hand-dipped at the distillery today. In India, Maker's Mark has found a loyal following among drinkers who find Jack Daniel's too sweet and Scotch too complex.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why is Maker is Mark bourbon so expensive in India?
Maker is Mark at Rs 5200 in Delhi is expensive in India primarily because of import duties on American whiskey. Import duty on spirits is around 150 percent in India making any foreign whiskey significantly more expensive than domestic alternatives. The wheat bill production and hand-dipping of every bottle in red wax also adds to the cost. However compared to the international retail price, the India price is broadly comparable once import duties are accounted for. For the quality delivered — a genuinely smooth, elegant wheated bourbon — the price is justified, particularly when bought in Goa at Rs 4200.
What is a wheated bourbon and why does it matter?
Most bourbons use rye as the secondary grain after corn in the mash bill — this gives the characteristic spicy, peppery character of brands like Wild Turkey 101. Wheated bourbons replace the rye with wheat, which produces a softer, sweeter and more gentle spirit. Maker is Mark is one of the most famous wheated bourbons and the difference is immediately noticeable — it is smoother and more approachable than rye-forward bourbons. Other famous wheated bourbons include Pappy Van Winkle and W.L. Weller. If you find standard bourbon too spicy, a wheated bourbon like Maker is Mark is the answer.
Maker is Mark vs Wild Turkey 101 — which bourbon should I buy in India?
Maker is Mark and Wild Turkey 101 represent opposite ends of the bourbon flavour spectrum and both are available in India. Maker is Mark at Rs 5200 in Delhi is smooth, sweet and approachable — perfect for those who want elegance and simplicity. Wild Turkey 101 at Rs 4800 is bold, spicy and high proof at 50.5% ABV — for drinkers who want intensity and complexity. For beginners to bourbon, start with Maker is Mark. For experienced bourbon drinkers who want more drama, Wild Turkey 101 is the better value proposition at a slightly lower price.
Is the red wax on Maker is Mark just marketing?
The red wax dipping on every bottle of Maker is Mark is both marketing and a genuine part of the brand is identity and heritage. It was created by Margie Samuels, wife of founder Bill Samuels Sr., who dipped the bottles in red wax herself in the early days of the distillery. The practice has continued ever since and every bottle is still hand-dipped at the Loretto, Kentucky distillery today. The slightly irregular wax pattern on each bottle means no two bottles look identical — a small but genuine mark of craft production in a mass-market product.
Where can I buy Maker is Mark in India?
Maker is Mark is available at premium liquor retailers in major Indian cities including Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Chennai. It is less widely distributed than Jack Daniel is so smaller towns and standard liquor vends may not stock it. Goa offers the best retail price at around Rs 4200. Duty free at international airports stocks it at around Rs 3200, making it a worthwhile purchase for travellers. Calling ahead to confirm availability at your local premium store is advisable before making a special trip.
