Sutter Home White Zinfandel is one of the most famous accidents in American wine history. In 1972, winemakers at the Trinchero family's Sutter Home Winery in St. Helena, Napa Valley, experienced a stuck fermentation while trying to make a dry, Bordeaux-style blush wine from Zinfandel grapes, leaving unfermented residual sugar behind. Rather than discard the batch, they released it, and the accidentally sweet, pink wine became wildly popular through the late 1970s and 1980s, effectively inventing the White Zinfandel category and helping save Zinfandel vines that were at risk of being pulled out of California vineyards at the time. It remains the flagship of the Trinchero portfolio and one of the best-selling blush wines in America.
