History & Background

Barefoot began in a laundry room in Sonoma, California in 1965, and was formally launched as Barefoot Cellars in 1986 after business partners Michael Houlihan and Bonnie Harvey purchased the rights to the name. Acquired by E. & J. Gallo Winery in 2005, Barefoot used Gallo's distribution muscle to become the best-selling wine brand in the United States and, by 2019, the best-selling wine brand in the world by volume. Cabernet Sauvignon sits among the brand's original core varietals, built for approachability and consistency across the roughly 30 styles Barefoot now offers.

Production & Maturation

Production Method
Sourced from California vineyards and blended for a consistent, approachable style across large production volumes, fermented with an emphasis on soft tannins and fruit-forward character over dry, tannic structure.
Aging & Maturation
Minimal to no oak barrel aging; character comes primarily from fruit selection and blending rather than extended aging, keeping the wine ready to drink on release.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Barefoot Cabernet Sauvignon a good wine for beginners?

Yes, it's one of the most common starter reds in the US precisely because it's soft, fruit-forward and low in tannin compared to more serious Cabernet Sauvignons. It won't challenge a new wine drinker the way a structured Napa Cab might.

What is the price of Barefoot Cabernet Sauvignon in the US?

Barefoot Cabernet Sauvignon typically retails between USD 6.50 and 8.50 for a 750ml bottle at grocery stores and retailers like Total Wine, with some regional and delivery-app pricing running higher. It's consistently one of the most affordable Cabernet Sauvignons on US shelves.

Is Barefoot wine actually from California?

Yes, Barefoot is a California brand owned by E. & J. Gallo Winery, one of the largest wine producers in the US. Its fruit is sourced broadly across California vineyards rather than from a single estate, which is part of how it maintains such large, consistent production volumes.

Barefoot Cabernet Sauvignon vs Josh Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon — what's the difference?

Barefoot is the budget entry point at roughly half the price of Josh Cellars, with a simpler, sweeter, more fruit-driven profile. Josh Cellars offers noticeably more depth, oak integration and structure for the extra cost, making it the better choice for someone who wants a more serious Cabernet experience.

How should Barefoot Cabernet Sauvignon be served?

Serve at room temperature or very slightly chilled, in a standard red wine glass. Its soft, fruity profile also holds up reasonably well with a single ice cube on a hot day, which is not something you'd typically do with a more tannic red.
