The category that barely existed outside specialist circles a decade ago is now stocked in premium hotel bars across India, exported to the UK, US, UAE, and Europe, and discussed seriously by the same critics who spent years saying India could not make world-class whisky. They were wrong, and the bottles below are proof of that.

Made at Piccadily Agro Industries in Haryana using six-row Indian barley, it is matured in three cask types simultaneously: ex-bourbon, French wine, and Pedro Ximenez sherry casks. At 46% ABV and non-chill filtered, it is bottled without compromise.

On the nose: tropical fruit, honey, vanilla, and a hint of dried fruit from the PX sherry influence. On the palate: mango, caramel, gentle oak spice, and a warmth that is distinctly Indian without being aggressive. The finish is medium-long with a lingering sweetness. At its India price point of approximately Rs 3,200 to Rs 3,800 depending on the state, it offers more complexity per rupee than most things on a liquor shop shelf.

Made from Indian six-row barley and matured entirely in first-fill ex-bourbon casks, it is unpeated and light in style in a way that immediately makes sense to anyone familiar with lighter Speyside or Lowland Scotch.

Tasting notes describe honeyed sweetness upfront with turmeric, clove, cinnamon, and anise woven through, plus chocolate undertones and an orange citrus lift. It is aromatic, approachable, and honest. For those already confident in the category, Paul John Port Select Cask (Best Indian Single Malt at World Whiskies Awards 2026) is the step up: matured in ex-bourbon casks then finished in Port casks from Portugal's Douro Valley, adding dried fruit and structured spice to the naturally sweet Paul John house style.

3. Amrut Fusion: The Pioneer That Still Holds Its Own

Amrut Distilleries in Bangalore was making internationally recognised Indian single malt before anyone else took the category seriously. Amrut Fusion, which combines Indian and Scottish malted barley, remains one of the most distinctive expressions in the category. The blend of Indian barley (which matures faster and more intensely in Bangalore's heat) with Scottish malt creates a whisky that tastes like neither country fully but has a character all its own.

Rich, complex, and somewhat peated, Amrut Fusion sits in a different part of the flavour spectrum from Indri Trini or Paul John Brilliance. It is a more structured, layered drink that rewards attention. At the London Spirits Competition 2026, an Amrut expression was noted for rich, smoky aromas with tobacco, peat, vanilla, and toffee. 4. Rampur Select: The Himalayan Option

Rampur single malt from Radico Khaitan is produced at a distillery in the Himalayan foothills of Uttar Pradesh that has been operating since 1943. The elevation and proximity to the Himalayas gives the maturation environment here a slightly different character from south or central Indian distilleries.

Rampur Select, the entry expression, is smooth and balanced with notes of tropical fruit, caramel, and light spice. Rampur Double Cask adds complexity from ex-bourbon and ex-sherry maturation. GianChand is not a Goa story or a Haryana story. It is a northern India story that deserves much more attention than it currently receives. Availability is uneven outside of Jammu and Kashmir, which is the main limitation for drinkers in other states.

6. Godawan: Rajasthan's First Luxury Single Malt

Godawan, owned by Diageo and launched in 2021, is named after the Great Indian Bustard, a critically endangered bird native to Rajasthan. The whisky is made from locally sourced ingredients and aged in a combination of American oak ex-bourbon barrels and wine casks, bottled at 42.8% ABV. Rajasthan's desert climate creates extreme maturation conditions: very high summer temperatures, very dry air, and large temperature swings that push rapid interaction between spirit and wood.

The result is a whisky with a rich, concentrated character. Godawan 02 (the second release) has built on the profile of the debut expression with greater complexity. It crossed 125 international awards in 2026, which is a remarkable achievement for a whisky that is only a few years old.
