History & Background

Laphroaig sits on the south coast of Islay and has been producing whisky since 1815. The distillery malts a portion of its own barley using peat cut from Islay bogs, which gives the whisky its medicinal, heavily peated character. Prince Charles granted it a Royal Warrant in 1994 making it the only whisky to hold one. Either you love Laphroaig completely or you cannot understand why anyone would drink something this smoky. There is almost no middle ground. In India it has a small but intensely loyal following.

Production & Maturation
Production Method
The distillery malts around 20% of its own barley over peat fires. Double distillation in tall, narrow copper pot stills.
Aging & Maturation
Minimum 10 years in ex-bourbon American oak barrels. The light cask influence allows the dominant peat character to shine without interference.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does Laphroaig 10 taste like medicine?
Laphroaig 10 tastes medicinal because of the phenolic compounds — specifically cresols and guaiacol — produced when barley is dried over burning peat from the Islay bog. Islay peat is unique because it is formed from decomposed seaweed and coastal vegetation rather than inland heather and grass peat. This gives it an iodine, antiseptic character that is genuinely similar to certain medical antiseptics. This is not a flaw — it is the defining characteristic that has made Laphroaig one of the world is most recognised and fiercely loved single malts. If you are new to peated whisky, try the Amrut Fusion first as it is gentler.
Is Laphroaig 10 available in India and what does it cost?
Yes, Laphroaig 10 Year Old is available in India, though it is less widely distributed than mainstream Scotch blends. In Delhi it costs around Rs 8500 for a 750ml bottle, Mumbai around Rs 9200, Goa around Rs 6800 and Karnataka around Rs 8800. It is an imported single malt with high duty so the price reflects that. Duty free at international airports offers the best price at around Rs 5500. Specialist liquor shops in metro cities like Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore are the most reliable places to find it.
Laphroaig 10 vs Amrut Fusion — which is peatier?
Laphroaig 10 is significantly peatier than Amrut Fusion. Laphroaig 10 is made with heavily peated barley at around 40-45 parts per million phenols and has the intense medicinal, coastal peat character of Islay. Amrut Fusion blends peated Scottish barley with unpeated Indian barley, resulting in a more balanced peat profile with tropical fruit. If you enjoy intense, unapologetic smoke and iodine, Laphroaig 10 is your whisky. If you want peat alongside tropical fruit and complexity at a lower price, Amrut Fusion at Rs 4200 in Delhi is the better Indian option.
Does Laphroaig 10 have a Royal Warrant?
Yes, Laphroaig 10 Year Old holds a Royal Warrant from King Charles III, who granted it while he was Prince of Wales in 1994. It is the only whisky in the world to hold a Royal Warrant. The warrant certifies that Laphroaig is supplied to the Royal Household. Charles visited the distillery in person on Islay and has been a genuine enthusiast of the whisky. The Royal Warrant is mentioned on the label and is a significant part of the brand is heritage.
How should I serve Laphroaig 10 for the best experience?
Laphroaig 10 is best served neat at room temperature in a Glencairn glass. Adding a few drops of still water is highly recommended — water opens up the sweetness hidden beneath the smoke and reveals a vanilla and dried fruit character you would not expect from the initial nose. Ice is not recommended as it shuts down the complexity. If you are new to Laphroaig, start with a small pour of around 30ml and give it five minutes in the glass before tasting. The initial shock of iodine and peat settles into something genuinely beautiful with patience.
