John Walker started as a grocer in Kilmarnock in 1820 and began blending whiskies to create consistent products his customers could rely on. Black Label as we know it was created by his grandson Alexander in 1909. The square bottle and angled label were both deliberate choices — practical for shipping and distinctive on the shelf. Black Label is blended from around 29 malt and grain whiskies, each aged a minimum of 12 years. It is the standard against which most blended Scotch in India is measured.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Johnnie Walker Black Label the best blended Scotch in India?
Johnnie Walker Black Label is consistently the best selling blended Scotch in India and for good reason. It offers a well-balanced combination of smoke, dark fruit and vanilla that works equally well neat, on the rocks or with cola. At Rs 3200 in Delhi it sits at a price point where the quality is hard to beat. Competitors like Chivas Regal 12 at Rs 2800 and Black Dog Triple Gold at Rs 2400 offer alternatives but JW Black is the benchmark most Indian whisky drinkers use when evaluating blended Scotch.
Johnnie Walker Black Label vs Chivas Regal 12 — which is better?
This depends entirely on what you enjoy. Johnnie Walker Black Label has smoke, leather and dark fruit — it is bolder and more complex. Chivas Regal 12 is smoother, honeyed and more approachable — better for those who do not enjoy the smoky character of JW Black. JW Black is also slightly more expensive at Rs 3200 versus Rs 2800 for Chivas 12 in Delhi. Both are excellent whiskies at their price point. For smoky whisky lovers, JW Black wins. For those who prefer sweetness and smoothness, Chivas 12 is the better choice.
What is the price of Johnnie Walker Black Label in Goa?
Johnnie Walker Black Label is available in Goa at around Rs 2400 for a 750ml bottle, making Goa the most affordable state in India for JW Black. In Delhi it costs Rs 3200, in Mumbai Rs 3600 and in Karnataka Rs 3400. The price difference between Goa and Mumbai is Rs 1200 — significant enough that buying in Goa makes real financial sense if you are travelling there. Duty free prices run around Rs 1800.
What mixes well with Johnnie Walker Black Label?
Johnnie Walker Black Label mixes brilliantly with cola — this is the most popular way to drink it across India. Ginger ale is another excellent mixer that complements the smoky backbone. Soda water with a squeeze of lemon keeps the flavours clean and lets the whisky character come through. For a simple cocktail, try JW Black with ginger beer and lime over ice. For those who prefer their Scotch undiluted, two large ice cubes in a rocks glass is the classic serve that works perfectly with the Black Label.
Is Johnnie Walker Black Label available in 90ml and 180ml in India?
Yes, Johnnie Walker Black Label is available in 90ml, 180ml and 375ml bottles across most Indian states in addition to the standard 750ml. The 180ml bottle is particularly popular in India as it allows for affordable experimentation before committing to a full bottle. In Delhi, the 180ml costs around Rs 900 making it accessible for most drinkers. Availability of smaller sizes varies by state and the 90ml is not available everywhere — check with your local government-authorised liquor store.
