This is the whisky that started it all. Amrut Single Malt was the expression Jim Murray tasted in 2004 and ranked third best whisky in the world, causing a global reassessment of Indian whisky. Made entirely from barley grown in Punjab and Rajasthan, it captures India's terroir in a way that is increasingly recognised internationally. At 46% it is bottled without chill filtration, which preserves the full flavour and gives a slightly hazy appearance when water is added — a sign of quality that experienced drinkers appreciate.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Amrut Single Malt the original Indian single malt?
Amrut Single Malt was not the first Indian single malt ever produced but it was the first to achieve genuine international recognition and the first to be exported as a premium product. When Amrut was launched internationally in 2004 and subsequently scored in Jim Murray is Whisky Bible, it effectively created the category of internationally recognised Indian single malt. Everything that has followed — Paul John, Indri, Rampur — owes its international ambition to the path Amrut cleared. It remains a benchmark Indian single malt and at Rs 3500 in Delhi it is one of the best value premium whiskies available in India.
Amrut Single Malt vs Amrut Fusion — which should I buy?
If you are new to Amrut, start with the Single Malt. It is unpeated, approachable and showcases the pure Indian barley and Bangalore maturation character — tropical fruit, vanilla, warm malt and gentle spice. Amrut Fusion adds peated Scottish barley to the mix, creating smoke alongside the tropical fruit. Fusion is more complex and dramatic but also more of an acquired taste. Single Malt costs around Rs 3500 in Delhi versus Rs 4200 for Fusion. Both are non-chill filtered at higher ABV than most competition — genuine quality markers. Start with the Single Malt and graduate to Fusion when you are ready for the smoke.
What is the ABV of Amrut Single Malt and why does it matter?
Amrut Single Malt is bottled at 46% ABV and this matters because it is above the legal minimum of 40% and crucially it is non-chill filtered. Higher ABV means more flavour compounds remain in the whisky. Non-chill filtration means those compounds are not artificially removed. The result is a whisky with more texture, more aroma and more depth than many 40% expressions. When you add a drop of water to Amrut Single Malt it may turn slightly hazy — this is completely normal and actually indicates the presence of the natural oils that carry much of the flavour.
Where is Amrut distillery located?
Amrut distillery is located in Bangalore, Karnataka at an altitude of approximately 3000 feet above sea level. This altitude is significant — the combination of warm daytime temperatures and cooler nights at elevation drives a particularly active maturation process. The distillery draws water from sources in the area and uses locally grown Indian barley from Punjab and Rajasthan for its unpeated expressions. Bangalore is a large urban city but the distillery has operated there since 1948 with the site now surrounded by the expanding city. Visitors can arrange tours through the official Amrut website.
Is Amrut Single Malt available duty free in India?
Yes, Amrut Single Malt is available at duty free shops at major Indian international airports. Duty free prices are around Rs 2600 for a 750ml bottle, compared to the Delhi retail price of Rs 3500. This saving of around Rs 900 is worthwhile if you have access to duty free. Amrut is also one of the best Indian whiskies to bring as a gift when travelling abroad — the international retail price is typically equivalent to Rs 6000 to Rs 8000, making the Indian duty free price exceptional value.
