History & Background

Officer's Choice was created in 1988 by Kishore Chhabria while at Shaw Wallace in Kolkata. After a series of ownership disputes involving Shaw Wallace, Vijay Mallya, and Herbertson Limited, Kishore Chhabria founded Allied Blenders & Distillers (ABD) in 1988 and took Officer's Choice with him as the flagship brand. In 2013, Officer's Choice became the world's largest-selling whisky by volume, overtaking Johnnie Walker, selling 23.8 million cases. In 2014, it sold 28.4 million cases and overtook Smirnoff to become the world's largest-selling spirit brand of any category. Volume declined from that peak as premium brands grew, selling 21.3 million cases in 2024. It remains ABD's flagship, the brand that built India's largest domestic spirits company.

Production Method

Made from grain spirits — notably using grain-based ENA rather than molasses-based ENA, which distinguishes Officer's Choice from many older IMFL brands. The grain base gives it its clean, direct character. Kishore Chhabria's original positioning was grain-based quality at a budget price.

Aging & Maturation

No significant barrel ageing on the main expression. Officer's Choice Blue (the premium variant) uses Scotch malts aged in charred oak barrels. The standard expression is blended and bottled fresh.
