History & Background

Bagpiper was launched in October 1976 by Shaw Wallace and is one of India's oldest continuous whisky brands. It sold in the iconic square bottle with black and gold packaging, a design that became instantly recognisable across India. Bagpiper had a remarkable run of Bollywood ambassador associations — Ashok Kumar, Jackie Shroff, Dharmendra, Sunny Deol, Shah Rukh Khan, and Ajay Devgn — making it one of the most culturally visible Indian whisky brands of the 1980s and 1990s. Bagpiper was India's largest-selling whisky from 2005 until 2010, when it was overtaken by Officer's Choice. When Diageo acquired United Spirits, Bagpiper became a Diageo brand. The distinctive slogan 'Khoob Jamega Rang Jab Mil Baithenge Teen Yaar' (introduced 1993 with Dharmendra) became one of India's most recognised advertising lines.

Production & Maturation

Production Method
A molasses-based spirit blended with pot-still malt whisky specifically matured in pre-identified American oak casks. The American oak malt component gives Bagpiper its slightly more complex character than pure ENA-based IMFL. Diageo describes the flavour as 'a light malty aroma and a hint of smooth woody character.'
Aging & Maturation
The malt spirits used in Bagpiper are matured in American oak casks before blending. The standard expression uses pre-aged malt as a flavour component in an otherwise neutral spirit base.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Bagpiper whisky and who makes it?

Bagpiper is one of India's oldest whisky brands, launched in October 1976 by Shaw Wallace. It is now owned by United Spirits Limited (USL), a Diageo India subsidiary. It is a blended whisky using a molasses-based spirit combined with pot-still malt whisky matured in American oak casks. The American oak malt component gives it a slightly more complex character than standard ENA-based IMFL.

What is the price of Bagpiper whisky in India?

Bagpiper is priced at approximately Rs 380 in Delhi, Rs 500 in Mumbai, Rs 330 in Goa, and Rs 540 in Karnataka for a 750ml bottle. It falls between Officer's Choice and Royal Stag in most state price lists. Available in 90ml, 180ml, 375ml, and 750ml formats.

What does Bagpiper whisky taste like?

Bagpiper has a light malty aroma with a hint of smooth woody character from the American oak-matured malt component. The taste is mild sweetness, gentle malty depth, and subtle wood. It is smoother than Officer's Choice at a similar price point and was India's largest-selling whisky from 2005-2010, suggesting a broad appeal.

Why is Bagpiper famous in India?

Bagpiper became a cultural institution through its long run of Bollywood brand ambassadors including Dharmendra, Shah Rukh Khan, Sunny Deol, and Ajay Devgn. The 1993 slogan 'Khoob Jamega Rang Jab Mil Baithenge Teen Yaar' became one of India's most recognisable advertising lines. The brand was also India's largest-selling whisky from 2005 until 2010.

Is Bagpiper still popular in India?

Bagpiper remains one of India's recognised whisky brands but is no longer among the top sellers by volume. Officer's Choice, McDowell's No.1, and Royal Stag outsell it significantly today. It is widely available but has faded from the market leadership it held in the 2000s. It remains popular in North India and among older consumers who grew up with the brand.

What bottle sizes does Bagpiper come in?

Bagpiper is available in 90ml, 180ml, 375ml, and 750ml formats. The 750ml comes in the distinctive square bottle with black and gold packaging that has been associated with the brand since its 1976 launch.

How does Bagpiper compare to McDowell's No.1 at the same price?

Bagpiper has a slightly more complex, malty character due to its American oak-matured malt component. McDowell's No.1 is sweeter and more caramel-dominant. In blind tastings, Bagpiper often scores slightly higher for complexity in its segment, though McDowell's No.1 has a wider distribution and stronger brand presence. Both are solid entry-level IMFL whiskies for mixing.
