Why is it called Vat 69?

Vat 69 gets its name from a story dating back to 1882. William Sanderson, an Edinburgh wine and spirits merchant, created 100 different blended whisky recipes and stored each in a numbered vat. He invited friends and colleagues to taste all 100 blends and choose the best. The overwhelming favourite was the whisky in cask number 69. Sanderson named the blend after the winning cask and the name has remained ever since. It is one of the more memorable naming stories in Scotch whisky history and a genuine piece of spirits heritage.
