History & Background

Amrut Distilleries started making whisky in Bangalore in 1948, primarily for the Indian market. For most of its history it was largely unknown outside India. That changed dramatically in 2004 when Jim Murray, one of the world's most respected whisky writers, tasted the single malt and gave it one of the highest scores he had ever awarded a non-Scotch whisky. The word spread quickly. Fusion uses a blend of peated Scottish barley and unpeated Indian barley and is matured in Bangalore at an altitude of 3000 feet. The warm climate means the spirit interacts with oak far more rapidly than in Scotland, producing unusual depth for its age.

Production & Maturation
Production Method
Made from a blend of peated barley imported from Scotland and unpeated barley grown in the Punjab region of India. Double pot still distillation in copper pot stills.
Aging & Maturation
Matured in ex-bourbon American oak barrels in Bangalore at 3000 feet altitude. The warm climate accelerates maturation significantly compared to Scotland.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why is Amrut Fusion considered one of the world is best whiskies?
Amrut Fusion earned its reputation when Jim Murray, the author of the Whisky Bible, tasted it in 2004 and gave it an extraordinary score — ranking it among the top whiskies in the world. This was the first time a non-Scotch, non-American whisky had achieved such recognition. The whisky earned this because it genuinely delivers complexity that rivals whiskies costing three to four times more. The combination of peated Scottish barley and unpeated Indian barley, matured at 3000 feet in Bangalore is warm climate, creates a tropical-meets-smoky profile that is entirely unique. At Rs 4200 in Delhi it remains one of the best value premium whiskies in India.
Amrut Fusion vs Indri Trini — which is the better Indian single malt?
This is the defining debate in Indian single malt right now. Amrut Fusion at Rs 4200 in Delhi has a longer track record, international recognition and a peated profile with tropical fruit that is truly original. Indri Trini at Rs 3800 is newer, triple cask matured and slightly more affordable. Fusion has more smoke and drama. Indri Trini has more richness and sherry sweetness. Both are outstanding. If you enjoy peated whisky, Amrut Fusion wins. If you prefer rich, dark fruit and oak without smoke, Indri Trini is the better choice. Serious Indian whisky enthusiasts should have both.
What makes Amrut Fusion different from regular Amrut Single Malt?
Amrut Fusion uses a blend of peated Scottish barley alongside unpeated Indian barley — hence the name Fusion. The regular Amrut Single Malt uses only unpeated Indian barley. This gives Fusion a peaty, smoky dimension on top of the tropical fruit base that the regular single malt has. Fusion is also bottled at a higher strength of 50% ABV versus 46% for the regular single malt, giving it more presence and intensity. Both are excellent but Fusion has the edge for complexity and is the expression that first brought Amrut international recognition.
Is Amrut Fusion available outside India?
Yes, Amrut Fusion is exported to over 40 countries and is particularly well distributed in the United Kingdom, France, Germany and the United States. It regularly wins international awards and is stocked at specialist whisky retailers globally. In India the price is around Rs 4200 in Delhi — internationally it typically retails at the equivalent of Rs 7000 to Rs 9000 making the Indian domestic price extraordinary value. If you have friends or family visiting India from abroad, Amrut Fusion is one of the best bottles to bring back.
Why is Amrut whisky matured faster than Scotch?
Amrut whisky matures significantly faster than Scotch because of Bangalore is climate. The distillery sits at 3000 feet above sea level where temperatures regularly reach 30 to 35 degrees Celsius. This heat drives the whisky deeper into the oak barrel staves during the day and pulls it back out at night as temperatures drop. This accelerated interaction with the wood extracts flavour compounds in two to three years that would take six to eight years in Scotland is cooler climate. The angel is share — the portion of whisky that evaporates annually — runs at 12 to 15 percent in Bangalore versus just 2 percent in Scotland.
