History & Background

Old Monk was created by Mohan Meakin in 1954 and the bottle has barely changed since. The robed monk figure on the label is said to represent a monk from a local monastery. At its peak in the 1990s Old Monk was one of the largest selling dark rums in the world. Sales dropped significantly when flavoured and white rums took market share in the 2000s but it never lost its core audience. Today it is enjoying a remarkable revival driven by nostalgia and a new generation who discovered it through their parents. Old Monk is genuinely aged for seven years which is exceptional for a rum at its price point in India.

Production & Maturation
Production Method
Made from molasses produced at sugar cane mills across Uttar Pradesh. Pot still distillation followed by blending of various aged expression rums.
Aging & Maturation

Frequently Asked Questions
Why is Old Monk so popular in India?
Old Monk is popularity in India is one of the most fascinating stories in the country is consumer culture. Mohan Meakin has never spent significantly on advertising — Old Monk built its following entirely through word of mouth, institutional presence in military canteens and a genuinely good product at an honest price. The rum has been aged for seven years which is exceptional for a bottle at Rs 580 in Delhi. The dark molasses character and vanilla warmth created a sensory memory for generations of Indians — in student hostels, military messes and neighbourhood bars alike. It is nostalgia in a bottle for many and a discovery for the next generation finding it fresh.
Old Monk vs Bacardi Black — which dark rum is better?
Old Monk and Bacardi Black are both dark rums available in India at similar price points but they are quite different in character. Old Monk at Rs 580 in Delhi is heavier, more molasses-forward and more complex due to its seven year ageing. Bacardi Black at Rs 980 is lighter, cleaner and more refined but less characterful. For sipping neat or with a single large ice cube, Old Monk is the more rewarding experience. For cocktails where you want a clean dark rum base, Bacardi Black is more versatile. Old Monk is better value and more interesting for the dedicated rum drinker.
How long is Old Monk aged?
Old Monk is aged for a minimum of seven years in old oak casks at the Mohan Meakin distillery in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh. This is an extraordinary ageing period for a dark rum at its price point. By comparison, most IMFL spirits at similar prices are aged for far shorter periods. The seven year ageing is the primary reason Old Monk has such a distinctive, rich molasses and vanilla character compared to cheaper Indian dark rums. It is genuinely one of the best value aged spirits available anywhere in India.
Is Old Monk available in small bottles?
Yes, Old Monk is available in a range of bottle sizes that make it one of the most accessible premium rums in India. The 90ml bottle is available at around Rs 75 in Delhi — one of the cheapest small-format quality spirits in the country. The 180ml comes in at around Rs 160, the 375ml at around Rs 300. The full 750ml bottle is Rs 580. These small format bottles have been a key driver of Old Monk is cultural penetration across India, making it accessible to virtually all income levels.
Old Monk vs Maka Zai — IMFL rum vs Indian craft rum
Old Monk and Maka Zai represent two very different eras of Indian rum making. Old Monk at Rs 580 is a well-aged IMFL dark rum built on molasses and oak — deep, heavy, nostalgic. Maka Zai at Rs 2400 is India is first premium craft rum — lighter, tropical, made with fresh sugarcane juice alongside molasses and positioned as a sipping rum. Both are made in India but from completely different perspectives. Old Monk is comfort and tradition. Maka Zai is ambition and craft. Serious rum drinkers in India should explore both.
