History & Background

Richard Hennessy founded the House of Hennessy in Cognac in 1765. He was an Irish officer who had served in Louis XV's army and stayed in France after his military service. Today Hennessy accounts for roughly 40% of all cognac shipped globally. The VSOP was created in 1817 for the Prince Regent of England who requested a very superior old pale cognac. The name stuck and VSOP became the standard designation for cognac aged a minimum of four years. In India, Hennessy VSOP is the prestige cognac and is frequently gifted at weddings and festivals.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why is Hennessy VSOP so popular in India?
Hennessy VSOP has occupied a unique cultural position in India for decades — it is the aspirational gifting cognac at weddings, festivals and corporate occasions. The combination of the Hennessy name, the global prestige of French cognac and the rich dried fruit and honey character that appeals naturally to Indian palates has created deep brand loyalty. At Rs 8500 in Delhi it sits at a price that signals genuine luxury without being completely inaccessible. The VSOP — Very Superior Old Pale — designation and the minimum four year ageing gives purchasers confidence in quality regardless of their knowledge of cognac.
What is VSOP cognac and what does it mean?
VSOP stands for Very Superior Old Pale — a cognac designation that requires all component eaux-de-vie to be aged for a minimum of four years in Limousin oak barrels. The designation was created in 1817 when the Prince Regent of England — later King George IV — requested a cognac aged longer than standard expressions. The VSOP tier sits above VS (Very Special, minimum two years) and below XO (Extra Old, minimum ten years). Hennessy VSOP is blended from around 60 different eaux-de-vie selected by the Hennessy master blender to achieve consistency across every batch.
Hennessy VSOP vs Remy Martin VSOP — which cognac is better in India?
Hennessy VSOP and Remy Martin VSOP are the two most popular cognacs in India and represent different house styles. Hennessy VSOP at Rs 8500 in Delhi is richer, fuller and more generous — dried fruit, honey and the warm oak richness that comes from Limousin barrels. Remy Martin VSOP uses only Grande and Petite Champagne crus giving it a slightly more floral and lighter character. Both are excellent. Hennessy is more widely available in India and has stronger brand recognition. Remy Martin appeals to those who prefer a more elegant, lighter cognac style.
Is Hennessy VSOP good for mixing in cocktails?
Hennessy VSOP is best enjoyed neat or with a very small amount of still water to open the aromas. However it does make excellent cognac cocktails. The Hennessy Sidecar — Hennessy VSOP, Cointreau and fresh lemon juice in a sugar-rimmed coupe — is one of the finest classic cocktails possible. A simple Hennessy and ginger ale is a popular casual serve in India. The French 75 with Hennessy VSOP instead of gin is unusual but excellent. Using VSOP in cocktails is an indulgence given the price but the quality it brings to a cocktail is immediately apparent.
Is Hennessy VSOP available at duty free in India?
Yes, Hennessy VSOP is available at duty free shops at all major Indian international airports and is one of the most popular duty free purchases by Indian travellers. Duty free prices are around Rs 5500 for a 750ml bottle compared to the Delhi retail price of Rs 8500 — a saving of Rs 3000 per bottle. This substantial saving makes duty free the most sensible place to buy Hennessy VSOP in India. It is consistently stocked and available at every major airport duty free outlet in the country.
